Edmonton International Raceway (E.I.R) VoluteersĀ
The number 1 best way to watch a race is to be in the car race, racing. The 2nd best way to way watch a race is to be a volunteer.
If racing is for you there are many different classes to choose from, with different budgets. If you would like to try being in a car before building or buying one, EIR has race schools a 10 lap Stock Car Test.

WARNING ONCE YOU GET RACING IN YOUR BLOOD IT IS TOUGH TO GET OUT
Race Volunteers make events happen-from the organizers of the event to the person taking your ticket; it takes a lot of people to make an event work. Loretta said āthey are the backbone of racing EIR.ā
Oval Racing Volunteer Positions:
Race Director, Corner Marshals, Rescue/Safety personnel: Medical crew, Fireman & Clean-up Crew, Tow Truck driver, Pace Car Driver, Track Announcer, Timing personnel, Tech, Registration & Back Gate, Starter, Pitlane, Stop & go, Lineups, Pace Car Driver, Clean-up Crew.
I had a chance to do a small interview with Bruce Heggerud, EIR Safty Cordinator
Velocity: “How long have you been at EIR?”
Bruce Heggerud: “I have been at EIR now for 20 plus years.”
Safety personnel
Velocity: ‘What all comes with your safety team?”
Bruce Heggerud: “EMT’s, Firefighters & General Safety Personnel.”
Velocity: “So I myself working with the Race City Rescue Team we had people doing, Medical, Fire, Track Clean up Crew & Directing Traffic. So if someone is interested in doing Rescue what do they do?”
Bruce Heggerud: “They can either talk to Loretta or myself, then be put through a training course, then be put to work.”
Velocity: “Do you have training once a year?”
Bruce Heggerud: “We do run training session through out the year, then I do periododic spot training, where no one knows what’s happening until the last second.”
Velocity: “Like other tracks if a driver puts his window net down means he is ok & if not might not be.”
BruceHeggerud: “Correct.”
Velocity: “You guys make racing safe I know a lot of drivers are thankful for that.”
Bruce Heggerud: “Yes”
Safety Personnel
Velocity: “Being here at EIR do you have any favorites?”
Bruce Heggerud: “I actually love all the classes but I really enjoy watching the mini-cups. Being the young kids it is good seeing the young ones learning road techniques.”
With training & experience in regional events you can get you qualified to work National & International events.
Remember watching racing can fun but being part of the race is even better. So if you are not racing come-out and volunteer the second best way to watch a race, the best way is to be in the car.
