Bill Simpson Race Safety Pioneer Passed Away at 79

Bill Simpson, a leader in the world of motorsports safety, died December 16/19. Race safety advocate Bill Simpson broke both arms in a drag racing crash when he was 18 years old. Bill Simpson said, “Until then, I was like most drivers. The only time I thought about safety was after I’d been hurt. This time, I was hurt bad enough to do a lot of thinking.”

Simpson tested a parachute to slow down the drag cars & Simpson Drag Chutes was formed. His 1st inquiry was “Big Daddy” Don Garlits. He also had his company in 200 racing safety products, including as gloves, helmets, restraints, shoes & fire suits. Bill Simpson was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2003.
