Layne McIntosh Track Safety Expert

Photo by & Courtesy of Carol Douglas at Dinosaur Downs Speedway in Drumheller

Layne McIntosh- Track Safety Expert retires at the end of the season at Dinosaur Downs Speedway & Central Alberta Raceway. After 35 years of involvement in racing, Layne will retire from his safety truck duties. It began back in 1986 when Layne’s brother started racing at Calmar Raceway in 1986. Layne helped out by selling programs and working in the kitchen. He later became an assistant flagman. The weekends were family events with parents and siblings.

His father saw the need for an equiped safety truck, especially with the arrival of methanol burning cars on the scene. He put together his own truck with as much equipment as he could. Layne worked on the truck with his dad and learned from him the importance of a safer working environment. Driver safety was the main concern. As an adult he worked for EMS and the fire department for 16 years, gaining more information. He then started his own business called Motor Sport Safety. He brough all his previous training and added to it. He worked his way through the top tiers of professional racing in the U.S. – NASCAR, IHRA, Champ. IRl and more. He learned the best practice methods of safety & rescue.

Dinosaur Downs Speedway has had Laynes expertice since 2017. He has brought a professional level of safety and rescue to our track and to our racers. We will miss Layne who is a part of our racing family. He not only gives us his time on the track, but has been generously helping out as a volunteer, setting up events and doing any thing we have been short handed on. He has also come to the rescue of campers at the track when wind storms would blow through at night and cause chaos- we could count on him to appear in minutes to help. He and his dog Tansy have been great ambassadors for the sport of racing meeting and talking with kids at the races. Best wishes to Layne in all of his future endevours.

Layne has also taken it upon himself to provide extra training to our track personnel, on his own time.

Safety.

Layne McIntosh safety expert from our safety truck put on a training seminar for our starter Mike Oakley and our safety crew Chris Gilchrist, Les Hamilton, Burt Trithart. Showing them the many uses for the tools we have. Alternate ways to open a car and protect the driver. Layne is well versed in fire, first aid and rescue.
