William Byron grabs third win and a wave of early season momentum
The early season championship favorite spotlight has focused intently on Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron after grabbing his third victory of the season last weekend at Martinsville Speedway. Byron led a 1-2-3 Hendrick Motorsports finish at Martinsville on Sunday, with Kyle Larson finishing second and Chase Elliott in third. It was the first time a podium sweep by an organization has occurred at Martinsville. Now the 26-year old heads to Texas Motor Speedway riding a massive wave of momentum for the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 (Sunday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
Byron now leads the series in Playoff points with 15. He has also collected a pole, three top fives and five top 10s this season to accompany his three wins.
Expect the early season momentum of success not to subside this weekend at Texas, Byron is the most recent winner at the 1.5-mile track taking home the trophy last September. In nine career Cup starts at Texas Motor Speedway he has put up one win (2023), two top fives and five top 10s. His average finish at the track is 12.1 – fifth best among active drivers this weekend.
One Hot Lap: Qualifying at Texas is significant
Through 43 NASCAR Cup Series races held at Texas Motor Speedway, 76% of them have been won from a top-10 starting position, making Busch Light Pole Qualifying on Saturday, April 13 (10:30 a.m. ET on FS1, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) especially significant to the teams this weekend.

Keep On Streaking: Texas has produced seven different winners in as many races
William Byron is looking to become the fourth different driver in the NASCAR Cup Series to win back-to-back races at Texas Motor Speedway, but to do so he will have to snap a different winners streak that has reach seven different drivers dating back to 2019.
The current different winners streak at Texas consists of Denny Hamlin (2019-1), Kevin Harvick (2019-2), Austin Dillon (2020-1), Kyle Busch (2020-2), Kyle Larson (2021), Tyler Reddick (2022) and William Byron (2023).
Seven-time Is Back: Johnson to make second start of the season
Legacy Motor Club will be a little extra busy this week, as they will be fielding a third car for owner/driver and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. The NASCAR Hall of Famers second start of the 2024 season.
Not only is Johnson known for his seven Cup titles, but he is also known for this success at Texas Motor Speedway, where he leads the NASCAR Cup Series in wins with seven victories (2007, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 sweep and 2017) in 35 starts – a winning percentage of 20%.
Johnson’s first appearance of the season was in the DAYTONA 500, where he started 23rd and finished 28th. Johnson has announced a part-time schedule for 2024 that includes Texas Motor Speedway (April 14), Dover Motor Speedway (April 28), Kansas Speedway (May 5 and Sept. 29), Indianapolis Motor Speedway (July 21), Charlotte Motor Speedway (May 26), Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Oct. 20) and Phoenix Raceway (Nov. 10).
Making Moves: Biggest movers positive or negative in the points
Since the season opener at Daytona International Speedway who are the biggest movers, positive or negative, in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings? Well, you might be surprised.
Currently, the five drivers to climb the most positions in the NASCAR Cup Series driver point standings from where they were ranked following Daytona are Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney, who has gained +18 positions, Joey Logano, who has gained +16 positions, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr., who has gained +14 positions, RFK Racing’s Brad Keselowski and Front Row Motorsport’s Michael McDowell each have gained +13 positions in the driver standings since Week 1.
The top five drivers not going in the right direction in the NASCAR Cup Series driver point standings since Daytona are Spire Motorsport’s Zane Smith, who has dropped -21 positions since the season-opener, and Corey Lajoie, who has dropped -18 positions in the standings, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Noah Gragson, who has fallen -14 positions in the points, and Legacy Motor Club’s John Hunter Nemechek has dropped -13 positions and Erik Jones has dropped -11 positions.
Can anyone catch Hendrick Motorsports?
Celebrating their 40th anniversary, Hendrick Motorsports (HMS) is off to fast start this season having won four of the first eight races run (50%). HMS drivers William Byron (three wins) and Kyle Larson (one win) have already visited Victory Lane this season and now head back to Texas Motor Speedway where Larson won in 2021 and Byron won last season.
When it comes to winning in the Next Gen car, nobody has done it better than Byron and Larson. Byron leads the series with 10 victories in the Next Gen, while Larson has eight in the most recent iteration of the car in NASCAR’s premier series, which debuted in 2022.
And to boot, Hendrick Motorsports leads the NASCAR Cup Series in wins at Texas Motor Speedway all-time, with 11 victories among five drivers: Terry Labonte (Spring 1999), Jeff Gordon (Spring 2009), Jimmie Johnson (Playoffs 2007, Playoffs 2012, Playoffs 2013, Playoffs 2014, Spring 2015, Playoffs 2015, Spring 2017), Kyle Larson (2021) and William Byron (2023).

TCU Football Coach Sonny Dykes named Grand Marshal for Texas – TCU head football coach Sonny Dykes, who guided the Horned Frogs to a CFP National Championship runner-up finish in 2022, has been named Grand Marshal for the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday, April 14, at Texas Motor Speedway.
“It’s an honor to represent TCU as the Grand Marshal for the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400,” Dykes said. “I’m a NASCAR fan and this great opportunity is made even more special by it taking place at Texas Motor Speedway. TMS is such a historic venue and important part of the Fort Worth community. My family and I are very much looking forward to the race and the excitement that always comes with attending a NASCAR event.”
The Dykes-led Horned Frogs became the first team from the state of Texas to make the College Football Playoff and first from the Big 12 Conference to advance to the CFP National Championship. Dykes also became the first coach in TCU and Big 12 history to start the season 12-0 in his first season with the team en route to earning 10 National Coach of the Year awards in 2022.

Fort Worth’s Texas Boys Choir to sing National Anthem prior to Cup race at Texas – The world-renowned Grammy Award-winning Texas Boys Choir will perform the national anthem just minutes prior to the waving of the green flag to start the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway on April 14.
The 40-young-man-strong choral group, organized in 1946 and based in Fort Worth since 1957, will sing The Star-Spangled Banner directly in front of the Machinery Auctioneers Pre-Race Stage on the grassy ballfield area near the speedway’s start/finish line. The national anthem performance will air across the country as part of FS1’s pre-race festivities.
“Texas Boys Choir is thrilled to sing the national anthem for NASCAR’s Triple-Header Weekend at Texas Motor Speedway on April 14,” said Texas Boys Choir Artistic Director Todd Prickett. “These young men aged 10-18 have been ‘setting the pace’ for boy choirs across the country for the last 78 years. William Byron will make his 225th NASCAR Cup Series career start at Texas Motor Speedway. Byron will become the 134th different driver to reach 225 starts or more in the series. Byron made his first Cup Series start at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 18, 2018.
John H. Nemechek will make his 50th NASCAR Cup Series career start at Texas Motor Speedway. Nemechek will become the 311th different driver to reach 50 starts or more in the NASCAR Cup Series. Nemchek made his Cup Series debut at Texas Motor Speedway on November 3, 2019.
Michael McDowell will make his 475th NASCAR Cup Series career start at Talladega Superspeedway.
Alex Bowman is expected to make his 300th NASCAR Cup Series career start at Dover Motor Speedway.

First-time Cup winners at Texas are rare – Heading into this weekend 14 drivers that are entered in the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 are looking for their first NASCAR Cup Series career win, but they will have their work cut out for them because first-time winners are rare at Texas Motor Speedway.
Among the 23 different winners from the 43 Cup races at Texas, only two were first-time winners – Jeff Burton (April 6, 1997) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (April 2, 2000). It has been more than 20 years since the last a first-time Cup winner was crowned at Texas Motor Speedway.
This weekend, the hopefuls to get their first career Cup win are Josh Berry, Harrison Burton, Ty Dillon, Ty Gibbs, Todd Gilliland, Noah Gragson, Kaz Grala, Daniel Hemric, Austin Hill, Carson Hocevar, Corey Lajoie, John H. Nemechek, Ryan Preece, and Zane Smith.

Xfinity Series is back in a Lone Star state of mind
The NASCAR Xfinity Series will be heading to the state of Texas for the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, April 13 at 1:30 p.m. ET on FS1, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, the eighth race of the season.
In total, Texas Motor Speedway has hosted 45 NASCAR Xfinity Series races, producing 24 different race winners and 27 different pole winners. Six races have been won from the pole or first starting position, most recently by Ryan Blaney in 2018.
Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch holds several records at the 1.5-mile Fort Worth, Texas track – most wins (10), most poles (four), most top fives (17), most top 10s (18), most laps led (1,795), most lead lap finishes (20), and the race record (151.707 mph).
Jeff Green holds the qualifying record with his 2002 speed of 193.493 mph.
Only one previous Texas Motor Speedway winner is entered in this weekend’s Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 – Cole Custer (2018).
Drivers will kick off the weekend on Friday, April 12 with practice at 6 p.m. ET followed by qualifying at 6:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
Xfinity Dash 4 Cash continues at Texas Motor Speedway
Last weekend at Martinsville Speedway, Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Chandler Smith and Aric Almirola, along with Richard Childress Racing’s Jesse Love and Big Machine Racing’s Parker Kligerman competed for the chance to win the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus, and it was the veteran Aric Almirola who took home the big check after landing himself in Victory Lane on the 0.526-mile track.
The win would’ve given Almirola the chance to once again compete in the Dash 4 Cash at Texas Motor Speedway but since he’s not entered in this weekend’s Andy’s Frozen Custard 300, the next four highest-finishing eligible drivers will be dashing for the money – JR Motorsports teammates Sam Mayer and Justin Allgaier and Joe Gibbs Racing’s teammates Chandler Smith and Sheldon Creed.

Sam Mayer (No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet) has made four starts at Texas posting one top five and two top 10s.
Justin Allgaier: (No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet) has made 26 starts at Texas putting up six top fives and 14 top 10s. He has also led 359 laps at the 1.5-mile track.
Chandler Smith: (No. 81 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota) made his series track debut at Texas last season and posted an impressive fourth-place finish.
Sheldon Creed: (No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota) has made three starts at Texas posting two top 10s.
Texas Motor Speedway: A place of firsts
With all the records Kyle Busch holds at Texas Motor Speedway in the Xfinity Series, one could assume that the track is a memorable place for him but there are some other drivers who also have fond memories in the Lone Star State.
Four drivers got their first taste of victory in the Xfinity Series at Texas Motor Speedway – Dale Earnhardt Jr. (1998), Kurt Busch (2006), Chase Elliott (2014) and Erik Jones (2015).
Others got to experience winning their first Xfinity pole – Denny Hamlin (2006), David Ragan (2007), and Alex Bowman (2013).
It’s about to get rowdy!
With only one previous winner entered in this weekend’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Texas Motor Speedway (Cole Custer – 2018), there is sure to be some action-packed racing to see who will be wearing a cowboy hat in Victory Lane on Saturday.
Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Hill didn’t have the best debut at Texas Motor Speedway but since joining the series full time in 2022, has had strong finishes. In his five starts, he’s posted two top fives and three top 10s, including a runner-up finish in the 2022 Texas Playoff race. He’s had a standout season thus far, already with two wins (Daytona & Atlanta), five top fives and six top 10s through these first seven races.
Although nicknamed the “King of Road Courses,” Kaulig Racing’s AJ Allmendinger has always put on a show at the 1.5-mile Texas track. In his four starts, he’s posted one top five and four top 10s.
JR Motorsports’ Sammy Smith has only given the Texas track a go once (2023), but showed he can handle himself, racing his way up to a third-place finish after starting P15. The 19-year old is looking for his first win of the season – he’s posted five top-10 finishes in these first seven races.
NASCAR Xfinity Series, Etc.
Austin Hill to run select Cup Series races with RCR – Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Hill has been a star with the team’s Xfinity Series program and now, he will be given a shot to compete with the team’s Cup Series program in four races this season.
He has made one start with RCR in the Cup Series in 2022 at Michigan International Speedway. He raced his way up to an 18th-place finish after starting P31. Hill also had a few Cup Series stints last season, but all five starts were with Beard Motorsports.
His first Cup Series start this season will be this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway behind the wheel of the No. 33 Chevrolet. The other three races will be announced at a later date.
Ryan Truex returns at Texas Motor Speedway – Ryan Truex will be back with Joe Gibbs Racing this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway for his third Xfinity Series start of the 2024 season.
He will pilot the No. 20 Toyota at Texas for the first of three straight races (Talladega Superspeedway and Dover Motor Speedway to follow).
He’s made two other starts with the team this season. The first at the season-opener in Daytona where he finished 21st and the second at Atlanta Motor Speedway where he finished ninth.
NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series
NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series returns to the Lone Star State
With another thrilling weekend in the books, the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series will return to competition with the SpeedyCash.com 250 at Texas Motor Speedway on Friday, April 12 at 8:30 p.m. ET (FS1, MRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
There have been 49 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series races at Texas, producing 27 different winners and 31 different pole winners. Seven races have been won from the pole or first starting position, most recently by John Hunter Nemechek in 2021.
Here’s a look at the drivers who have etched their names in the 1.5-mile track’s record books:

Practice will begin Friday, April 12 at 4:05 p.m. ET on FS1 and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio followed by qualifying at 4:35 p.m. ET.
Victory Lane’s bigger in Texas
Two previous winners are entered in this weekend’s SpeedyCash.com 250 at Texas Motor Speedway, but they’re not the only drivers who have had consistently great performances in the Lone Star State.
Kyle Busch: The winningest driver in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series will run his fourth race on his select-tour behind the wheel of the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet this weekend. In Busch’s 14 starts at the 1.5-mile track, he’s posted five wins (2009, 2010, 2014, 2019, 2020), 10 top fives, 10 top 10s, and has led 525 laps. The 38-year old’s win in 2020 was the last time the veteran raced at Texas in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series.
Stewart Friesen: In 11 starts, the driver of the No. 52 Halmar Friesen Racing Toyota has posted one win (2022), one pole (2018), five top-five, and six top-10 finishes. He’s also led 90 laps. The 40-year old’s win in 2022 was his third in his NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series career. Last season, Friesen finished third at the 1.5-mile track.
Matt Crafton: The long-time NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series driver owns a vast majority of the records at Texas Motor Speedway – most top fives (17), top 10s (30), lead lap finishes (33), and laps completed (6,625). The driver of the No. 88 ThorSport Ford finished among the top-10 consecutively from 2011-2018. Last season, he finished 13th.
Grant Enfinger: The veteran behind the wheel of the No. 9 CR7 Chevrolet has yet to crack the top five this season, but that could change this weekend at Texas. In 11 starts at the 1.5-mile track, Enfinger’s posted one pole (2019), five top fives, seven top 10s, and has led 60 laps.
Christian Eckes establishes early season dominance
The first six races of the 2024 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series season have produced intense, action-packed competition, and Christian Eckes has remained one to watch each week.
The driver of the No. 19 McAnally-Hilgemann Racing Chevrolet has quickly become the ‘Short Track King’ with two wins under his belt at Bristol and Martinsville. Not only that, but Eckes is one of only a handful of drivers who have consistently ran in the top 10 each week – the only exception being at Atlanta (32nd) due to brake failure. The 23-year old has also led the most laps this season with 306.
Although ThorSport Racing’s Ty Majeski leads the points standings with 248 points, Eckes has been continuously chipping away at the lead each week, sitting back in fourth (-11). Among the four drivers currently locked into the Playoffs, the Middletown, New York native has collected the most Playoff points (13).
In four starts at Texas Motor Speedway, Eckes has posted two top fives, two top 10s, and 90 laps led. Notably, both top-five finishes have been runners-up. Last season, Eckes finished 15th. If the breakout star can find his way into Victory Lane again this weekend, he will become the first driver to win back-to-back this season.
Majeski jumps to Truck standings lead with Texas in his sights
ThorSport Racing’s Ty Majeski has catapulted himself into the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series points lead following his runner-up finish at Martinsville Speedway.
Majeski currently is seven points ahead of TRICON Garage’s Corey Heim in second and seven points ahead of McAnally Hilgemann Racings Tyler Ankrum in third.
Majeski will look to hold on to the standings lead at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend. The 29-year old from Seymour, Wisconsin has made three CRAFTSMAN Truck Series starts at Texas posting two top-five finishes. His average finish at the 1.5-mile track is 8.0 – third best among active drivers.

Christian Eckes is expected to make his 100th career NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series start at Darlington Raceway.

Breaking Through: Six drivers have won their first Truck Series race at Texas – In the 49 previous CRAFTSMAN Truck Series races at Texas, six drivers have won their first career race at the 1.5-mile speedway; most recently last season when Carson Hocevar, driving for Niece Motorsports, earned his first victory in the series.
The six drivers to win their first Truck race at Texas are Carson Hocevar (4/1/2023), Jeb Burton (6/7/2013), Clint Bowyer (11/3/2006), Brendan Gaughan (6/7/2002), Travis Kvapil (10/5/2001), and Bryan Reffner (10/13/2000).
