It was an incredibly busy at Dinosaur Downs Speedway this past weekend. Featuring for the first time flat track racing on our 1/2 mile flat track and Legends cars were out to try our 3/8 mile oval for the first time.

Saturday started off with a vintage bike show and shine. Both Saturday and Sunday featured six classes of flat track motorcycle racing. We had Vintage A,B,C, and Vintage 4 Valve Singles; as well as Modern 250 & 450 classes.

The bikes brought with them renowned Calgary track announcer Stu McColl. Stu is well known in the racing world having announced at Race City for twenty five years, everything from bikes, drags and stock cars. Stu himself is a racer. He began racing bikes in 1978 and is still racing. He runs a light Super bike on the road course at Castrol. Stu’s 70 years are no where to be seen when he
announces with the same enthusiastic love for racing he did in his early announcing days.

Also on hand, to flag the racing was Doug Biette. He is also a bike racer who started in 2011 at the age of 54. He had incredible skill flagging our races.

The racers found the track to be much to their liking and purpose. Legendary racer Don Galloway of Edmonton took home a number of the trophies and cheques this weekend.

The action continued into the evening. The hobby stocks brought out a good group of hard chargers. The Legends took to the track and as everywhere they race, became an instant fan favourite.

The mods came to race and gain track advantage as wells points toward their championship.A multi-car crash during a heat race on Saturday resulted in a roll-over off corner three. Jesse Fitzpatrick’s #1 left the track and rolled off the back side of the track, out of sight of most spectators. The track emergency crews arrived quickly to find Fitzpatrick already out of his car and in good condition. A roar of applause went up from the fans when Mike Hansen, President of the Drumheller Ag. Society which runs the track; gave the sign that popular driver Jesse Fitzpatrick was okay.

Many Fitzpatrick family members were at the track including his wife and children, father Merl who also races mods and mother Wendy who is a track volunteer.

His car was towed to the pits in rough shape. Merl Fitzpatrick said: “It’s a total write off, but some parts would be salvaged.” Incredibly the roll cage is in perfect condition and shows how safety equipment is so important.

Fitzpatrick continued to race on Sunday with the help of fellow racer, dale Richards of Fort St. John B.C. Richards loaned his car (purchased just this past spring) for the day. A #1 was taped over Richard’s #92 and the tough Fitzpatrick raced on.

We can’t wait to see what will happen with the Mods next weekend (August 26 & 27) when they compete for weekend prize money totally $11,000.
