Interview with JUNIOR 2/4 STROKE 14 year old Kart 7 Jill Altirano from Calgary Alberta.
Velocity: “Here with Jill Altirano. What classes do you run?”
Jill Altirano: “Junior 2 4 Stroke.”
Velocity: “Which Kart # are you?”
Jill Altirano: “7.”
Velocity: “When did you get into Kart racing?”
Jill Altirano: “4 Years ago. My brother started so I wanted to try it out. I found I liked it, so it just kind of stuck.
Velocity: “So did you race at the other track, “Varsity?”
Jill Altirano: “Yes.”
Velocity: “So what do you like about racing?”
Jill Altirano: “I’m very competitive; so I like the competition, the atmosphere and it’s kind of like a family. It’s fun to make friends with your competition on and off the track.”
Velocity: “So do you have future dreams in racing?”
Jill Altirano: “I am not thinking about a career in racing at this point, it’s just a hobby. I am not really sure on what I want to do. If I am steered in the right direction of racing, I guess I would do it.”
Velocity: “A lot of great Canadian racers came from Kart racing, do you have a favorite?”
Jill Altirano: “I don’t really watch a lot of racing. I watch Formula 1 racing sometimes and my brother roots for Vettel, so I guess I do too.”
Velocity: “I have seen you race, it is exciting! What would you say for someone new getting into it?”
Jill Altirano: “You are not going to be super fast at first, so don’t expect to be on the podium your 1st race. Eventually everyone has their turn. Everyone starts some where.”
Velocity: “Do you have any sponsors or anyone you want to thank?”
Jill Altirano: “Mom & Dad for working on my kart, my Sponsor VISA, my brother for supporting me, my friends for coming out.”
Velocity: “Well you won the 1st 2 weekends, & a great 2nd this weekend, so today should be an interesting result. Good Luck!”
Jill Altirano: “Thank You.”

Interview with JR. MINI MAX 10 year old Kart 8 James Altamirano & Gil Altamirano
Velocity: “So we have a family of racers, what class & Kart # are you?
James Altamirano: “Mini Max & my Kart # is 8.”
Velocity: “What got you into Kart racing?”
James Altamirano: “I remember when I was 6; I wanted to buy a go kart. After a conversation with my dad about the kart; he found Race City. He took me there to watch the Western Canadian Championships at Varsity Speedway. After that we were interested in kart racing so we bought a Kart. It just escalated from there.”
Velocity: “So do you have a favorite race car driver?
James Altamirano: “Sabastion Vettel.”
Velocity: “So do you like F1?”
James Altamirano: “Yes.”
Velocity: “So are you hoping someday to be a F1 Racer?”
James Altamirano: “Yes. It is kind of unlikely though; but hopefully I will.”
Velocity: “So what do you like about racing?”
James Altamirano: “I like the adrenalin, the competition, the winning like my sister & the challenge of things going right or wrong.
Velocity: “What would you suggest to someone new getting into it?”
James Altamirano: “Everyone starts somewhere, the pros used to be slow. If you look at the Formula 1 drivers, they probably weren’t always winning at the beginning when they first started. So even you if you are just starting you’re not going to win your 1st time, but you get your opportunity.”
Gil Altamirano: “He started out in the back continually, seat time made a big difference, along with a great team & a person like Joey from Overdrive. He really has an expertise & knowledge of Karting. He puts you on the straight and narrow. If you get help from him & others like him, you get faster.”
Velocity: “So Gil (dad) you have 2 kids into racing what got you into racing?”
Gil Altamirano: “I have always liked cars, I do not drive fast. I am probably the slowest one on Deerfoot, but I find the kids are motivated. They are disciplined to do something like motorsports. Our family has become cohesive, we travel together and we have triumphs together & disappointments together. It actually brings us closer together to accomplish a means to an end, which we enjoy. The community itself is a karting community; everybody is there to help you out. Like we said we started out in the back & now we have won a few championships. We started off with a good season, I believe James is 1st overall in Edmonton; Jill is 1st overall in Edmonton also & 1st in Calgary at this time, you never know what happens though. It is a challenge but we step up to the challenge itself.
Velocity: “That sounds great, the family is from right here in Calgary & the whole family makes the trip to Edmonton to compete.
Gil Altamirano: “My wife is the crew chief; she keeps us calm, has everything organized & keeps us focused altogether. She also brings our faith as we glorify god through this.
