Interview with John Kwong President of the Calgary Kart Racing Club (CKRC)
Velocity: “This is the second event of the season for Calgary Kart Racing Club (CKRC) at North Star Raceway in Strathmore & you were saying you had some of the public out.”
John Kwong: “I put a post on the Strathmore events page, so the Strathmore residents would be aware we are in their area. A lot of people still do not know the track is here, it is a good family event to come watch racing, and free admission.”
Velocity: “So you raced in 3 classes today, that must be tough on the body?”
John Kwong: “I am feeling it now, mostly the ribs, get tired from all the G-forces & the neck but it is early in the season.”
Velocity: “What classes are those?”
John Kwong: “Briggs Light, Senior Rotax Max & Shifter Class.
Velocity: “It looked like you were having a lot fun battling.”
John Kwong: “You always want close competition, Shifter was good today & Rotax classes were good, the four stroke class needs to bring it up a little bit. It would be nice to have a battle with the Four Stroke class also.”
Velocity: “I saw in the race you started to run away with, there were some big battles behind you.”
John Kwong: “They were battling with themselves too much, they were not pushing or drafting & pushing each other to catch up to me.”
Velocity: “So you had some people out & great racing for the 2nd event how are things looking?”
John Kwong: “Club Membership is a solid 140 members. We know there is some people in the wings that will join. We got going a month earlier, the track was ready this year & the weather has been cooperating also. The club is in good shape, as you can see we are doing more renovations; the big building is our BBQ picnic area. The little building will be moved to the end of the big building when the leveling is done for racers & the public.”
Velocity: “So is there a concession?”
John Kwong: “Yes Marcus’s wife is doing that for us.?
Velocity: “So if someone comes out to watch the races, it is free admission & they can grab a bite to eat?”
John Kwong: “Yes they can grab a bite & make a day of it.”
Velocity: “It is really competitive, exciting races, it is funny to see how fast the young kids are going.”
John Kwong: “Junior 1 they are the ones that had the accident, typically they race safely, these things happen, it’s racing. The numbers for that are really strong, 13 Junior 1s, 8-9 Junior 2’s. It is good to see the club 50/50 adults to kids amongst the classes, a really good mix.”
Velocity: “I was amazed how fast they were going, for as young as they are.”
John Kwong: “Kids sometimes are faster than the adults, because of their fear factor.
Velocity: “It was an exciting day, how are the schools going?”
John Kwong: “The Try a Kart events, so far so good, we had the 1st two at the end of April & it was sold out, the next one is June 18 on a Sunday. That one is almost sold out, we only do 7 a year, the guys that run it & the other volunteers that support it that is about as many as we can do.”
Velocity: “This is defiantly the best way if you are interested in kart racing to do it.”
John Kwong: “Yes Try before you buy.”
Velocity: “Your kid kart program, how is that going?”
John Kwong: “Pretty good they have 4 kids in it now & should be growing.”
Velocity: “Thank you.”
John Kwong: “Thank you.”

This was an exciting day of CKRC kart racing at North Star Raceway in Strathmore. You can call this family racing with siblings battling each other for position. James Altamirano & his sister in Jill Altamirano in Junior 2 Briggs. Nicholas Taylor and his brother Zachary Taylor in Junior 1 Briggs had contact with each other bringing out the red flag. From their spectator stands you can see 90% of the track, at free admission there is no better deal. So if you ever wanted to go kart racing come out & see it for yourself, next race is a double header May 28 & 29 at North Star Raceway in Strathmore. If you like what you see you can look into the clubs “Try a Kart” program that gives you a chance to try a race kart before you buy one. If racing is not you they always can use more volunteers, otherwise come out & watch the races for free.

Volunteer Race Officials
It takes a lot of people to put on an event on; my favorite is being a track-side Corner Marshal. The best way to watch a race is to be in the kart. The second best way to watch is to be a trackside marshal. If you are interested in racing but not sure about it yourself, being a marshal might be for you. Marshals are there for emergencies and to communicate with racers with flags and to communicate regarding the race with others via radio. Training is provided by an extremely experienced Race Director Fred Causer & experienced Marshals.
