This will be the 3rd year for the Calgary Kart Racing Club (CKRC) at North Star Raceway in Strathmore, AB CKRC is a non-profit multi class kart racing club with a long history with members from ages 8 – 60 years old. Come out & see exciting CKRC race events & you will be surprised seeing kids with so much skill already. A lot of great Canadian IndyCar drivers came from kart racing such as
Paul Tracy, Greg Moore & James Hinchcliffe. CKRC members that have moved up in racing like Cameron Hayley who ran a full season with in the 2015 & 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
If you ever wanted to go kart racing now is your chance. The CKRC have a great way to see if kart racing is for you, ‘Try a Kart’,program designed allows the public to experience kart racing for a small fee. Experience real race karts, with an hour-long classroom instruction & then 3 on track sessions.

I was extremely impressed with all the improvements they did last year, a timing board & they have lights like an F1 track. The marshals are the controllers, they have Blue, Yellow, Green & Slippery Surface (Debris) lights Fred Causer CKRC Manager/Race Director is the only one that overrides them all & has the control of the Red. Marshals are using both flags & lights, it is up to the marshal themselves, but they were trying to have the racers to recognize the lights. When I marshaled F1 it was one guy was on lights & the other flag people did flags, but we had a lot personnel for that.
Up in the tower Fred Causer controls the track & the lights system, last year he had Wayne who usually does start the finish line was being trained to use that system as well. There is a lot of work going on in the tower, it is more than a one person job now, control the track, watch the racing, operate the flags & penalties.
One thing I noticed is it did was tell you how much time was left & the checkered flag. It also counts down on laps it can also issue penalties on it. For penalties all they need to do is type in the drivers number, it will flash a warning flag, a black flag. On Shifter karts it does a ready to race board, which sets the grid, then give them a solid red start or a pre-sequence start.
I noticed other improvements, they had their kitchen all set up & going. I did tell them I had a complaint, I had the combo. I said “Your burgers are too good I have to have 2 instead of just one.” Needless to say it is worth the trip to North Star Raceway in Strathmore for exciting Kart racing.

Volunteer Race Officials
It takes a lot of people to put on an event on; my favorite is being a track-side Corner Marshal. The best way to watch a race is to be in the kart. The second best way to watch is to be a trackside marshal. If you are interested in racing but not sure about it yourself, being a marshal might be for you. Marshals are there for emergencies and to communicate with racers with flags and to communicate regarding the race with others via radio. Training is provided by an extremely experienced Race Director Fred Causer & experienced Marshals.
