Flag to Flag WIN for team Cycle Works in the 2016 mini bumb at Sandy Beach AB

Big thanks to Cycle Works and Polaris for the sweet RZR Turbo. And not to forget Brandon A. Malo and Casandra Elhard for the big thrash getting back in the game from this mornings adversity. Now I’m off to Australia, let me know when winter is done…

Great shot of the 1st and 2nd place UTV’s today. Those Yamaha boys gave us a good run but in the end they didn’t have enough to take on the Polaris Turbo RZR

Interview with Jim Titmus of Team Zero

Team Zero: Ryan Biford (Bike Owner), Jim Titmus, Patrick Lambe raced in the 2016 Sandy Beach 4hr Endurance Ice Race February 21

Team Zero had 10 batteries for the race, each battery is lithium polymer, $2500 each, so $25,000 worth of batteries on the weekend. They still had to charge the them as 2 batteries will last half an hour to 45 minutes, it will depend on the length of the track. Pit stops are fast as the batteries just slide out & snap back into position.

Velocity: “What speed do you think the bike will be doing?”

Jim Titmus: “We can go as fast as we want, the bike is capable of doing 85-90 mph. Speed is not the problem the motor has lots of power, the battery is the limited factor. So we try to limit how hard we twist the throttle to make the batteries last a little longer. Set of tires front fender, basically a dirt bike with an electric motor. ”

Velocity: “So like gas will you have indication when you will are low on battery power?”

Jim Titmus: “Yes a battery level gauge.”

Velocity: “So at a certain level you know when to come in.”

Jim Titmus: “Yes but the whole thing is to optimize batteries, it depends on how long the track, because we do not want to run out of juice before the end of the loop. The loops would be 7 to 10 klms long, the goal is run out of power at the end of the loop not out on the track. Then come in change batteries, we have generators & chargers. So as soon as a set comes off we will be charging.”

Velocity: “So you do not have a clutch & when you ride a regular bike you can gear done for more torque do you miss that?”

Jim Titmus: “There is something called re-gen, short form for regenerated braking when you twist off the throttle the engine actually reverses & turns into a generator. This can actually put some juice back in the battery when you decell & there is a switch in the brakes, so that add brakes you actually get more regen. So when you twist off the throttle you have so much regen, it does feel like engine braking, same type of principle. We use this to our advantage to get more distance. Coming into the corner I will turn off the throttle to apply the regen & if it is a long one I will apply little brake, so it engages the switch so we get more regen, I regen as much as I can.
