NASCC Ice Racing Update

The Winter Driving/Ice Race School, and Race 1, are postponed by one weekend. The new school start dates are Jan 24 & 25. Race1 is now Jan 26. School price is a bargain at $150. Go to the NASCC.AB.CA website for event and registration information under the Racing/Forms & Downloads menubar, or the Event Reg menu bar. See Sean’s message below about ice conditions. Mark these dates on your calendar!

It looks like Telford Lake will work for the event, with a bit more time to thicken up the ice, and a bit more time for the City of Leduc to clear the road into the Lake for us. Roy’s Lake near Stony Plain definitely will not be used this year, as the ice is very poor there.

Telford Lake Ice Report

I took a snowmobile on to Telfrod Lake today and rode around the entire lake. There was water on top of the ice in a couple of places but for the most part there was no water on top of the ice.

I drilled 4 test holes and the depth of ice ranged from 14- 17 inches with the top 10-12 inches being slush ice and the bottom 4 inches being much harder than the top 10-12 inches.

My plan is to plow a test track as soon as we get approval from the city of Leduc to access the lake. If the test track doesn’t flood we will be good to go and if it does indeed flood we will be done.

Given the poor quality of ice this year I would like to suggest running only rubber to Ice this year in all classes. Or allow may be street studs in the studded clases but no race studs. This would preserve the ice we have and if we go to Castrol we will be running only rubber there so given the choice I would prefer to run on a road course on a Lake vs the oval. Hopefully we will have a good cold snap between now and spring which might help to produce some good quality ice. At the moment I think we are in a wait and see holding pattern.
