Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wins 2nd Race of the Year in the Pocono 400 at Pocono Raceway

Car 88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. National Guard Chevrolet won the 33rd Annual Pocono 400, his 21st victory in 519 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races and his 2nd win and 9th top-10 finish in 2014. This is Earnhardt’s first multiple-win season since 2004, when he won six times. This is his first victory and 12th top-10 finish in 29 races at Pocono Raceway. His previous best Pocono finish was 2nd (twice). With his second victory of the season, Earnhardt is guaranteed to be among the top 16 winners after race No. 26. He now needs only to finish in the top 30 in driver points after race No. 26 and attempt to qualify for every race to officially clinch a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

Car 2 Brad Keselowski Redd’s Ford was the car to beat until close to the end of the race when he picked up some debris on his grill which caused temperatures to increase. On lap 155 he tried using a lapped Car 10 Danica Patrick GoDaddy Chevrolet to upset the airflow on the front of his hood, to release the debris on the grill. This failed to work for him and it left an opening for Dale Earnhardt Jr. to take the lead.

Brad Keselowski posted his fourth top-10 finish in nine races at Pocono Raceway. It’s his seventh top-10 finish in 2014.

3rd place winner Car 41 Kurt Busch Haas Automation Chevrolet posted his 15th Top 10 finish in 26 races at Pocono Raceway.

In 4th place came Car 11 Denny Hamlin FedEx Ground Toyota followed in 5th place by Car 42 Kyle Larson Target Chevrolet, the highest finishing rookie.

Finishing in 6th place, Car 48 Jimmie Johnson Lowe’s/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet did a job fighting to get upfront after starting out in 20th place. Jimmie Johnson had a scare as he was leaving the pits. Car 9 Marcos Ambrose Stanley Ford came in and Johnson was spun into Car 51 Justin Allgaier BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet pit and almost hit his tire changer and carrier.

7th Place was Car 31 Ryan Newman Wix Filters Chevrolet. 8th Place Car 24 Jeff Gordon Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet leads the point standings by 16 points over Matt Kenseth. 9th Place Car 78 Martin Truex Jr. Furniture Row Chevrolet and lastly in the Top 10 was Car 1 Jamie McMurray Cushman/Cessna Chevrolet in 10 place.
