The 2015 Western Canadian Ice Race Championships was an exciting weekend of Ice Racing put on by the Northern Alberta Sports Car Club (NASCC). I have always said the best way to watch a race is to be in the car, the 2nd best way is to be a corner marshal. It looked like too much fun, not to try to get a car together for next years Ice Racing season. I have had this feeling once before when I watched claimer racing at Race City Motorsport Park, after that I raced claimers for 10 years & built 10 cars.

The weekend started off on Friday with a five-hour drive from Calgary, worth every minute. After checking into my hotel I went to meet Clem Salcedo NASCC Ice Racing Chief Course Marshal & other volunteers in a local lounge, where we talked racing. There I found out the start time for Saturday would be at 9:00 A.M. & we would have to set-up the track. So after a great breakfast I went to the lake to help set-up, upon arrival I was told we had to place triangles though-out the course for the drivers. After the 1st few laps you can see how these triangles can show the drivers see where the track & snow banks are.

It was a lot of fun & action as I was stationed on corner 1 for Saturday with an experienced ice/road racing marshal Kathy Stokowski. From that location you can see how much fun the drivers must be having, as they corner in a 4 wheel drift on the ice, like a sprint car corners in the dirt. As for action there must have been 3-4 cars that wound up in the snow bank upstream of our station across from us, except for 1 car, which was directly in our station. In road racing when an incident is upstream of your station you can stay green and the cars can get back to racing, unless control tells you to go full course yellow or red flag.

Sunday was another fun day stationed on corner 3 with an experienced ice/road racing marshal Doug Finch. Corner 3 gave a good vantage point to see all the spins in corner 2, 3 & 4. It is also a fast part course where you see a lot of snow & ice being brought up, affecting visibility. One red flag was called for Car 25 NS Danny Bracken Rabbit roll over in corner 1, responded to by rescue & ambulance. The driver was ok but was checked over by the ambulance crew as a precaution. The car was only slightly damaged and it still finished the weekend. After the red flag was dealt with, it was a full day of racing action.

The last 2 races were an Australian Pursuit Race & a Charity race. The Australian Pursuit Race was exciting because all the cars were put on the track at the same time with the slowest cars having a head start & the fastest cars going out last. The fastest cars of the weekend could have won the race if the race was a lap longer, but they had to contend with lots of traffic. The Charity race looked like it was fun also, as many drivers were pushing hard for the win. This was a great race weekend put on by The Northern Alberta Sports Car Club (NASCC).

After the event I had a chance to ask Andy de Boon Clerk of the Course some questions.

Velocity said “I had a lot fun last weekend, I expect to be back next year but I will be working toward coming back as a racer.”

Velocity asked “What did you think of the weekend of racing?

Andy de Boon said “I thought the racing was good but the low car counts hurt the show. I think the Australian pursuit was a fun way to end the season and the charity race was one of the best in years.”

Velocity asked “What did you think of the 2015 ice racing season?”

Andy de Boon said “Overall I think we had a good season and it is one of the few times we ran every day we scheduled , no date changes for bad weather or ice conditions. I look forward to you bringing a car next year.”

If you ever wanted to go racing I would suggest thinking about it now, there’s lots of time to build a car or you might find a good deal on buying used one. There is a school at the beginning of the Ice Racing season & lots of racing every race weekend. If you are not sure about racing make sure you come-out & marshal an Ice Race to see for yourself.
