Phoenix a hot bed of Motorsport

Like many Canadians my racing buddy Brian Minto spends his winters in Phoenix Arizona. I have not been to Phoenix, so I thought besides being a warm spot to spend your winter, what does Phoenix have? It turns out Phoenix is a Mecca of all sorts of Motorsport.

This weekend Wild Horse Pass Raceway hosted the NHRA Carquest National event – a huge 3 day event as usual, likely drawing a total of about 200,000 attendants for the event.

Phoenix International Raceway hosted the Indy car tire testing on Saturday.

Two weeks ago, the Monster Energy Supercross event was held at the University of Phoenix football stadium.

Next weekend, NASCAR sweeps through town for a multi-race weekend. Interestingly, Budweiser again did its ticket promotion that involved buying two dozen beer for a total of about $24 including two tickets to the Cup race held on the Sunday. My tickets for this year are in the Petty grandstands at corner four, in row fourteen.

That same weekend, there is a traditional large season-opener event stock car event at Canyon Raceway, a small local dirt track located about 10 miles from my house. The event last year likely had 5-6 classes including about 50 winged sprint cars, 50 “dwarfs” and 50 IMCA modifieds trying hard to make the field.

There is always a drag race event each weekend at Speedworld, an interesting family-owned race facility about 20 miles from my house that includes many different kinds of race track
