Saturday August 23
This was another great weekend event put on by NASCC that had lots classes, teams, cars & volunteers at Castrol Raceway in Nisku Alberta. One thing about road racing I like is big fields of cars with different classes gives you a different perspective as some lower horse power cars beating bigger horse power cars. In the King of the Road race Car 40 Dennis Goruk GT1 was working his through the field from the back as Car 73 Greg Lutomski GT2 kept working his way up front passing lapped cars. It made it exciting race to marshal right to the checkered flag as Car 73 Greg Lutomski GT2 won the race.

At lunch time on Sunday August 24 I had a chance to talk with Car 73 Greg Lutomski & Dennis Goruk.

Car 73 GT2 Beaumont Alberta Driver Greg Lutomski winner of King of the Road Race August Saturday August 23 & his 95 RX7 Body style, tube chassis car, 13 Bri Perential port, 4 speed Jericho dog box transmission.

I asked “Have you won any other King of the Road races this year.”

Greg Lutomski said “No this was actually my 1st full day at this track with this car, earlier in the year I made it out for the second day, after we figured what happened with the distributor. We found out we had a dead distributor so we actually ended up switching over from one my other ones I have set-up for this motor. After that the car ran phenomenal & we went to Portland to do the Road Cup Race.“

Greg Lutomski was also part of 2nd place overall Car 36 Team Bandit in the NASCC Inaugural LA1K in July.

Dennis Goruk long-time Race City GT1 Champion, driver Car 40 GT1 at Castrol Raceway.

I asked “How do you like Castrol, are times a bit slower here because it is more tight & technical?”

Dennis Goruk said “Yes quite a bit slower here”

I asked “Because of the concrete?”

Dennis Goruk said “Its not the concrete it’s just the track is short, lots of twists & turns I have to run a lower gear, then at Race City which keeps the speed down. I probably am only doing 140 where as Race City I was doing 175 mph.”

I asked “Would you say it is tighter here?”

Dennis said “Yes way tighter I had to change the set-up on the car to make it work here.”

I said “2nd place in the King of the Road you started way back in the field and as you got closer to the front Car 73 kept burying you with traffic?”

Dennis said “Traffic played a role like it always does in racing but it was fun. We are going to put some rubber on for the next race & see how we do as will have to start from the back again.“

I said “I think it was back in 98 where I used to watch you race at Race City.”

Dennis Goruk said I think i started running this chassi back in 96 and it was an Oldsmobile body & then we put this one (Corvette) on in 2000.

I asked “Do you like the Vette?’

Dennis said “It`s got better aero dynamics and just feels better.”

Sunday August 24 WCMA Points Races
Car 61 Russ Timmons GT1 also had a great weekend winning 1st overall in every race he was in, including 1st in Class in the WCMA Points Race. Car 73 Greg Lutomski GT2 2nd place overall in the GT race & 1st in Class in the WCMA Points Race, also won the KING OF ROAD. Car 86 Gary Lohues GT3 6th in the GT race overall & 1st in Class in the WCMA Points Race drove the wheels off the car. Car 84 Sean Lin place 9th place overall in the GT race & 1st in Class in the WCMA Points Race. Car 44 Chris Semanciw 1st place overall in the Spec Miata Race & 1st in Class in the WCMA Points Race. Car 12 Dominic Knight 1st place overall in the IT Race & 1st in Class in the WCMA Points Race. Car 51 Jed Harrison 6th place overall in the IT Race & 1st in Class in the WCMA Points Race. 11. Car 37 Gary Roberts 11th place overall in the IT Race & 1st in Class in the WCMA Points Race. Car 76 Jeff Taylor 13th overall in the IT Race & 1st in Class in the WCMA Points Race. Car 3 Teague Karall 1st place overall in the Open Wheel & 1st in Class in the WCMA Points Race.

Car 42 Steve Goodfellow won the Vintage Race Feature Race.

There were local yellow flags through-out the track all weekend except wherever I happened to be. I was on a corner as a marshal for both days, on corner 11 on Saturday & Corner 3A on Sunday. Since I did not have any yellow flags in my corners except a really slow car stopped briefly before & after my flag station I had lots of fun blue flagging. Blue flagging is warning drivers that a faster car is approaching by holding out the flag & waving a blue flag lets drivers know they are about to be passed in your station which is done for safety. When dealing with many classes at the same time this can be very important information for drivers with different speeds on track at the same time. In practice & qualifying you can blue flag based on faster car approaching & you are about to be passed. In races you only blue flag based on leaders coming up on lapped cars.

If you are interested in racing or being a road course marshal the 2014 final NASCC Eurasia Cup Road Race weekend Five Awards Presented By Subway is September 13 & 14, 2014 at Castrol Raceway. Future racers this gives you a chance to see the cars up close & personal & talk to many drivers in all the different classes to see what would be good for you. Volunteers these are a great bunch of people who make racing possible, take a look at the group photos for August 23 & 24. Being one of these committed group of volunteers with training & experience you can qualify to big events like Indycar & F1.

So if you are not racing consider being one of the people dressed in white as a road course marshal. For the best seat in the house consider being a track-side marshal, if you are an experienced marshal or brand new contact Chief Course Marshal Tracey McEwing: traceymcewing@shaw.ca In the case that being track-side is not for you it takes many people to put an event like this on.
