Edmonton International Raceway (E.I.R)
It was an exciting night of oval racing Saturday, May 23 at the Edmonton International Raceway (E.I.R). It was a full night of racing with each Class getting 2 Heat races & 1 feature race. Classes running were NASCAR Super Stocks, Thunder Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Mini Cups & Baby Grands. Every class had lots of action & was exciting to watch. The racing reminded me of oval racing at my old home track, now closed Race City Motorsports Park, Late Models, Hobby Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, & Baby Grands.
EVOLUTION RACING MINI CUPS
Evolution CupCar Series are Mini Cup Cars that are 1/2 scale stock cars built just like the Sprint Cup cars you see on TV. It is a class specifically designed for youth’s ages 9 to 16, who could be the next Kevin Harvick or Danica Patrick. This was an exciting race to watch with young drivers with so much skill, navigate around the track. It was like rush hour on HWY 2 as the leaders made their way through lapped traffic.
Car 10 Alex Krause won Evolution Cups feature race. 2nd place Car 18 Tyler Emond. 3rd Place Car 44 Blake Hamilton.
4th Place Car 7 Travis Dolter followed by 5th place Car 28 Autumn Kopeck. 6th Place Car 84 Tyler Knowles followed by 7th place Car 77 Faith Luther. 8th Place Car 95 Rylee McKinnet followed by 9th place Car 1 Blaine Kopeck. Lastly in the Top 10 was Car 13 Kajun Fitzpatrick in 10th place.
3rd Place Car 44 Blake Hamilton
NASCAR THUNDER CARS
NASCAR Thunder Cars reminded me of the Hobby Stocks at Race City that had rubbing is racing, kind of a show.
Car 17 Phil Williamson won the NASCAR Thunder Cars feature race. 2nd Place Car 08 Don Lawrence. 3rd Place Car 34 Don Roberts.
4th Place Car 47 Lee Werner followed by 5th Place Car 86 Rod Pahl. 6th Place Car 9 Wes Humphrey followed by 7th Place Car 27 Bill Schmidt. 8th Place Car 95 Rob Young followed by 9th Place Car 21 David Rendall. Lastly in the Top 10 was 0th Place Car 71 Kenzie Fraser in10th place.
1st Place Car 17 Phil Williamson
NASCAR SUPER STOCKS
NASCAR Super Stocks was a great show as Car 96 Erica Thiering NASCAR Canadian Tire Series driver was trying to take the lead from Car 84 Ryan Knowles. Thiering was relentless on the outside trying to pass Knowles, she was spun but still threatened at the end.
Car 84 Ryan Knowles won the NASCAR Super Stocks feature race. 2nd Place Car 96 Erica Thiering. 3rd Place Car 14 Rob Hildebrandt
4th Place Car 10 Taylor Krause followed by 5th Place Car 13 Thomas Davidson. 6th Place Car 22 Ashley Halsey followed by 7th Place Car 27 Ian Wilson.
2nd Place Car 96 Erica Thiering
3rd Place Car 14 Rob Hildebrandt
BABY GRANDS
The Scaled Late Model is a 2/3 scale replica of a NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Car. Dale Edwards was dominate as he won both heat races & feature race.

I had a chance to do a small interview with NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Driver Car 87 Erica Thiering RaceCarByAva/CBRT Ford. Erica was back home after being the Pinty’s presents the Clarington 200 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
NASCAR Super Stock Car 96/NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Car 87 Erica Thiering
Velocity: “Talking with Erica Thiering, fan favorite at Edmonton International Raceway her home track. Congratulations on your 1st road race, on one of the most difficult tracks. What was favorite part of the track?
Erica Thiering: “I liked it all, it was a big learning curve, I think that was the exciting part of it. I went there really with no expectations, coming out the way we did; I think I am pretty happy with that.”
Velocity: “I myself getting to motorsport as a marshal at Mossport (Canadian Tire Motorsport Park) I always thought corner 2 looked difficult.
Erica Thiering: “I had a little bit of trouble with it the 1st couple of times, honestly after that it didn’t phase me at all. That is what everyone says corner 2, but I think I had more issue with corner 4 if anything.
Velocity: “So I see your next race is a small oval?
Erica Thiering: “Yes 1/4 mile Chaudiere Quebec.”
Velocity: “That will be good for you.”
Erica Thiering: “I have actually ran on this track before, it was my 1st NASCAR Canadian Tire Series start last year. It is a tight little track, very racey, more than here because it has more banks.
Velocity: “One great story you had this year was a little girl who designed your race car if you can explain how that went”
Erica Thiering: “It started as a tweet & pretty much didn’t like how my car looked last year. So she designed my car, we really liked it & we had nothing to put on the car, so we said hey why not. Then we wrapped it & surprised her with it. She was speechless really and now she is part of our team, she is our little mascot. She signs autographs when I am not around, people actually know her, which is kind of cool.
Velocity: “Any other races or tracks you are looking forward to be racing in NASCAR Canadian Tire Series?”
Erica Thiering: “Probably home will be my biggest one now, I am excited for them all but home will definitely be the one for sure.
Velocity: “You will have a lot of fans.”
Erica Thiering: “Exactly, it is a little more pressure and you want do better because all these people have been watching me for 10 years. I want to do well for them.”
Velocity: “Is it good to be back home?
Erica Thiering: “Happy to be home but also happy to be there.”
Car 96 Erica Thiering
Velocity: “What are you racing today?
Erica Thiering: “NASCAR Super Stock Car 96.”
Erica Thiering with a STACKER Race Car
Velocity: “I have never seen the stacker anywhere else, very unique, have you seen them anywhere else?”
Erica Thiering: “It is actually funny my dad got in touch with some Thiering’s down in the states, they used to race stackers back in the day.
Velocity: “So how do you drive a stacker? That is team work”
Erica Thiering: “That is team work. The bottom does the gas & the top does the steering. You really have to feel the car; there is no communication between the 2 at all. When I did it was with Dave & we are similar racers.
