It was an exciting day of Kart Racing with the Calgary Kart Racing Club at their new track, North Star Raceway in Strathmore. The 1st race was the Senior Rotax class which was exciting with the fight for position & some contact. I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day with sunny skies & racing. The CKRC is a non-profit multi class kart racing club with a long history with members from ages 8 – 60 years old. Watching the young racers is fun as you might be a witness to the next James Hinchcliffe or Danica Patrick.
My 2 favorite ways to watch a race is: racing yourself or volunteering. The CKRC has a great program called ‘Try a Kart’.
If you ever wanted to go kart racing now is your chance. The CKRC have a great way to see if kart racing is for you, ‘Try a Kart’, program designed allows the public to experience kart racing for a small fee. The 2nd best way to watch a race is as a Volunteer Race Official; my favorite is being a track side Corner Marshal. Corner marshals are the personnel that surround a track at corner stations, communicate to racers with flags & communicate with each other controlled by radios. Response to the track & to the racers is also part of the job but training is provided as to when & how to do so. As an experienced marshal I would say bring layers of clothes, racing runs rain or shine. Always try to where white clothes, never red or yellow so not to cause confusion to racers when flagging. You will be outside for the day so bring bug spray, sun block, extra food & water even though lunch is provided by the club.
It takes a lot of people to put on an event on: Corner Marshals, Weigh Scale Marshall, Grid/Pit Marshall, Starter, Pre-race Technical Inspector, Post-race Technical Inspector, Lap Scoring and Time Keeper, Recovery Vehicle Operator & Waiver and Gate Personnel.

I had a chance to interview Bill Wallace & George Wallace CKRC Senior 4 Stroke Kart # 64,
Velocity: “Congratulations on your new track.”
George Wallace: “Thank You.”
Velocity: “Do you like this track over the other one”?
George Wallace: ” I’m more use to the previous one; but over time I could get use to this one! ”
Velocity: “I like the elevation changes you have here.”
Bill Wallace: “The other one had more long straights, which was good for guys with power. This one has more twisty corners, more technical & a combination of things to make it more challenging. If you mess up 1 corner, you could mess up the next 3 corners, so it can be quite punishable, I guess.” Time will tell, the track is based on an Australian track already proven. We are not re-inventing the wheel; we have some pre-curser that this laid out does work.”
Velocity: “What got you interested in Kart Racing?”
George Wallace: I was interested when I was younger; I think I started at age 9. I was just interested in the thrill of how fast it could go & overtaking.”
Velocity: “What class are you running now?”
George Wallace: “Senior 4 Stroke”
Velocity: “Do you have any aspirations after kart racing.”
George Wallace: “I am not sure but if the opportunity came up that would be a nice profession.”
Bill Wallace: “We are not looking at Formula 1; we are looking at having fun. It is competitive in the racing but after the race it is a family atmosphere, help each other out, they will lend you parts.
Velocity: “So what’s your favorite part of racing?
George Wallace: “Overtaking!’
Velocity: “Wouldn’t you like to have DSR like F1 or IndyCar’s push to pass?”
George Wallace: “I like overtaking because I find it absolutely necessary.”
Bill Wallace: “In Karting there is lots of overtaking. When you get really good races the lead can change 5 times; so you do not have the aerodynamic problems of formula cars.”
Velocity: “On your old track you had longer straights. Was it long enough to use a draft to sling shot past another kart?”
George Wallace: “Yes depending on how many are following & your position.”
Bill Wallace: “4 Guys could pull away from the rest of the pack.”

Interview with Kim Snider long time CKRC volunteer that has been volunteering since 2007.
Velocity: “So you have been doing this since 2007 as a marshal; rain or shine you come out”
Kim Snider: Wet, cold or freezing.”
Velocity: “What would you suggest for someone new?”
Kim Snider: “You just have to come here with a positive attitude to work with the people, work with the racers, work with the club & work with control. Control is Fred Causer he is our boss, he protects us so we can keep the kids racing. It is a great combination, I started when Allen Berg was managing the club, Fred was our control person, Allen Berg was good to but was more involved in his racing outfit. Now that Race City is gone Allen Berg is in California and we are by ourselves now. Fred is a great guy with his European experience it has been immense to us. I think the club would echo that to.”
Velocity: “Do they put a new person with an experienced one like you?”
Kim Snider: “Yes. These are new people and we want to know if they will come back again. If they do that just gives us freer time because we are running a bunch of double headers now this year. It is kind of a nice break if we get enough volunteers & it is good to see some people eager for it.
Velocity: “So you have a brand new track.”
Kim Snider: “We have been very lucky here with this new track. North Star Construction being behind us with construction & the town of Strathmore giving us the use of land. It is well worth it to know we got a more permanent home here, the part I like is watching the kids grow up. JR. 1 we had a guy that started racing in 2007 & is now racing in the states.
