EDMONTON Speedway Park (1966 to 1982)

Revival Weekend (August 24/25)

There was a time long ago when Edmonton was an International Motorsports Destination!

Home of the Can-Am Racing Series, Formula 5000, Formula Atlantic, Formula 5000 and Trans Am … Edmonton attracted the Elite of the International Motorsports world.

Teams like:
McLaren, Porsche, Penske, Holman & Moody, Lola, Shadow, ATS and many more …

Drivers of legendary renown:
Gilles Villeneuve, Keke Roseberg, Jackie Stewart, Bruce McLaren, Dennis Hulme, Mark Donahue, Mario Andretti, Danny Sullivan, Peter Revson, Bobby Rahal and others … A time when … 750kg, 750hp + Can Am cars shattered the Road Race Circuit with speeds touching 200+ mph, Formula Atlantic & Formula 5000 (then the doorway to Indy car and Formula One). Trans Am

Sedan racing (Camaros, Mustangs, Javelins, Porsche and more) carved through the 6 turn 4km course enthralling audiences worldwide …
(here’s a taste … https://www.facebook.com/GoodwoodRRC/videos/2680854685258181/ )

Edmonton hosted the BEST of the Drag Race World as well!
Top Fuel, Top Fuel Funny Cars, Super Stock, Altereds … all of the very best from across North American regularly appeared on the North End of Edmonton at Speedway Park.

The Drivers … Don Garlits (Big Daddy), Don Prudhomme (The Snake), Tom McEwen (The Mongoose), then there was the local talent breaking into the Big Time, Gary Beck (Twice Top Fuel World Champion), Terry Capp, Gordie Bonin (240 Gordie), Ron Hodgson Racing, Gordon Jenner … many now in the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame. Then in 1982 … it stopped. Edmonton Speedway Park was gone and so was racing. Till 1991 when Capital Raceway opened and now has evolved to Castrol Raceway.

August 24/25 at Castrol Raceway the Ghosts awaken … we turn back the clocks to celebrate:

Edmonton Speedway Park Revival (at Castrol Raceway):

Combining the celebration of Road Racing in Edmonton with the 60th Anniversary of the Capital City Hot Rod Association and its remarkable Drag Racing History.

This event is to celebrate the long history of Motorsports in the Edmonton area, with a focus on the cars that raced at Edmonton Speedway Park in NW Edmonton from 1968 to 1982.

The ESPR event comprises celebrations being held at Castrol Raceway, Leduc AB.

1) Edmonton Speedway Park Revival:
Held on Saturday August 24th from noon to 4pm, A joint celebration car show with Capital City Hot Rod Association and the Northern Alberta Sports Car Club. CCHRA is celebrating 60 Years of drag racing and NASCC has been organizing motorsport events for over 62 years; a major milestone for both clubs.

NASCC has been involved in all forms of motorsport and was the organizing club for CAN-AM, TRANS-AM, Tommy Fox Classic, the INDY-Car events held at Edmonton Municipal Airport, Ice Racing with Bobby

Unser and many more historic events over the years.

The Edmonton Speedway Park Revival is a unique car show format focusing on motorsport and race cars, we will have historic cars that competed in CAN-AM, TRANS-AM, F1 and other international events.

The CCHRA cars will feature historic and current Drag Race cars.

This is an opportunity for the public to view cars that are normally secreted away in private collections. How many people have actually looked at a 1968 McLaren M6B? A 1974 Maki F1? How about a

1970 Ferrari 512S? This is your opportunity to see these cars up close, you may even see them racing on the Castrol Raceway road course!

Car Show Entry is only 15$ per car, with proceeds shared with Stars Air Ambulance.

Gates open to the public at 12 noon and the car show runs until 4pm. Admission is a cash donation to the Leduc Food Bank
