‘Consistency’ Won The Inaugural LA1K for Car 37 Team Goberts at Castrol Raceway in Nisku Alberta

1st Place overall winner, Car 37 Team Goberts, took the checkered flag at lap 371 to complete the 1000 Kms at a time of 10:58:20.126.  Goberts  stayed consistent through out the race for the win. Their best lap time was 01:36.701 with a speed of 100.516 Km/h.

It was exciting to watch 2nd place overall winner, Car 36 Team Bandit Racing, fighting to unlap themselves with so many laps down in the pits. They were the fastest car out there with a best time of 01:29.455 and at an average speed of 108.658 Km/h, still finished 3 laps down at the checkered flag.

3rd place overall winner was Car 142 Team Sundance Mazda, finished 3 laps down at the checkered flag with a best time of 01:31.345 and a speed of 106.41 Km/h.

With an endurance race, it’s one thing is just to finish the race.  So, I have to mention 16th place overall winner, Car 2 Team Giant Killer Racing, who did not sound healthy early-on but the team motto must be: “never quit and never die”. They were not the fastest car in this race, but kept going with a best time of 01:39.741 and speed of 97.452 Km/h,  finishing 166 laps down at the checkered flag.

This great event put on by The Northern Alberta Sports Car Club (NASCC) featured 21 teams/cars split into 3 Classes with 70 drivers and 75 Volunteers. There was a lot of work done by a lot of people just to make the race happen, both the day before and day of the event.

I was proud to be part of the Inaugural Leduc, Alberta 1000 with a great corner crew. The only thing that didn’t play ‘nice’ nice was Mother Nature with a rainy start in cold weather. The weather did improve by mid-day and then it got hot into the afternoon as control kept reminding everyone to keep drinking water to stay hydrated.

The race had 2 full course cautions with quite a few local yellows. In corner 2 we only had 1 car spin (right in front of us) which only injured a few traffic cones, but we had a great view of all the action in corner 1 just before us.

If you’re a ‘road racer’ or ever wanted to be one and did not attend this event, I suggest making sure you do it next year. NASCC has race schools and with wide variety of classes it might be easier to get into racing then you think.

With ice racing in the winter and road racing in the spring and summer, once you get racing in your blood it’s hard to stay away. The only reason for not being a marshal at the race next year is I was able to get my friends together to race a car in the event.
