It was a hot weekend of Kart Racing with temperatures reaching 30C. The racing action was just as hot as the weather in the CKRC Race 3‏ & Alberta Shoot Out # 1.

2 ways to watch a race is: racing yourself or volunteering. The CKRC has a great program called ‘Try a Kart’.

If you ever wanted to go kart racing now is your chance. The CKRC have a great way to see if kart racing is for you, ‘Try a Kart’, program designed allows the public to experience kart racing for a small fee. Interview with Fred Causer – CKRC Race Director & Manager

Velocity: “Fred you were saying you had 109 karts racing today?”

Fred Causer: “This is probably our biggest entry for this year for sure & the biggest in Canada for this weekend, I am guessing.

Velocity: “This is the Alberta Shoot out, people from all over coming?”

Fred Causer: “Primarily from our sister kart track EKRC, but we also have guys from Regina & Saskatoon here.”

Velocity: “One thing I like is a big field of karts & you certainly have that here. What would you say is your biggest class?’

Fred Causer: “The class you just watched the Senior Briggs. The field today is about 22.

Velocity: “You guys had a lot of work to get here, what do you think of your new facility?”

Fred Causer: “I think it’s great you have real nice land, there is not one corner on this track that is the same as the other, and we have the elevation change. It is very challenging for a driver, once they master it they can be quick, we have seen times, tumbling & tumbling, it is a fantastic track.

Velocity: “In the last race we saw multiple lead changes.’

Fred Causer: “Yes absolutely in the Senior Briggs class it is not finished until the finish line, literally on the finish line. You can go from 1st to 10th in one corner & have real close racing.”

Velocity: “I always mention in my articles you can always come-out & volunteer. You are the contact for volunteers; is there anything you would ask of someone new.

Fred Causer: “No, we just for ask for whatever time they can give us, we are always appreciated of. If only available for half a day, we will accept them for half a day or a whole day that is fantastic. We will train them to the best of our ability. I am proud to say I train our marshals, I think we have some of the best marshals in Western Canada if not Canada.

The 2nd best way to watch a race is as a Volunteer Race Official; my favorite is being a track side Corner Marshal. Corner marshals are the personnel that surround a track at corner stations, communicate to racers with flags & communicate with each other controlled by radios. Response to the track & to the racers is also part of the job but training is provided as to when & how to do so. As an experienced marshal I would say bring layers of clothes, racing runs rain or shine. Always try to where white clothes, never red or yellow so not to cause confusion to racers when flagging. You will be outside for the day so bring bug spray, sun block, extra food & water even though lunch is provided by the club.

It takes a lot of people to put on an event on: Corner Marshals, Weigh Scale Marshall, Grid/Pit Marshall, Starter, Pre-race Technical Inspector, Post-race Technical Inspector, Lap Scoring and Time Keeper, Recovery Vehicle Operator & Waiver and Gate Personnel.
