This one of my favorite events is when Chumpcar comes to town, because In Chumpcar it is not about the car it is about the racing. The this is the most cost-effective endurance road racing in North America.

Interview with Wendy Edwards of Chumpcar Canada

Velocity: I’m here with Wendy Edward with Chumpcar Canada so yesterday was the start of the two 12 Hour races and you had 23 car start.

Wendy Edwards: We had 23 cars start I believe, 16-17 finished well we actually had to postpone the race and then we had to cancel because of lightning. In down pours we will still race but as soon as lightning comes, it’s not safe for the Workers, so we have to bring them in & obviously we can’t race.

Velocity: Yes it’s unsafe and you don’t want be at the highest point with a radio. Good decision on safety, in a car you’re okay but you don’t want to be out on the corners or in the stands. Besides the severe weather how was the day?

Wendy Edwards: It was a good day we had were here once a year so it’s not like we have the same cars showing up at like Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. Some cars that do race in the US & here so they are a little more used to the endurance part of it having them last for 12 hours, It’s quite a feat so you push a car or a regular car to its limit, any car for 8-12 hours it’s a learning process for sure.

Velocity: Yes, just surviving just finishing the race in an accomplishment,

Wendy Edwards: Yes, finishing the race is definitely a win on both sides.

Velocity: Everyone looks happy.

Wendy Edward: Everyone is very happy they are happy they are back they are having a fun time it’s always a blast for these guys.

Velocity: Did you have some American teams come up or just some teams that are Canadian that go south?

Wendy Edwards: Yes, there is a lot of Canadian teams that go south, I don’t think there’s a lot of teams in the US that come over to this part. Americans have more sought after race tracks then the Canadians do.

Velocity: Calgary I actually got into marshaling & volunteering at Mosport (Canadian Tire Motorsports Park) I can imagine you get a high car count there to drive that famous track. It is a great track with multi level with elevation changes.

Wendy Edwards: Yes a lot of people that just love that track it’s a very fast track, it is 5 star long track.

Velocity: As tracks in the USA, you got some beautiful tracks Laguna Seca I would love to do that course.

Wendy Edwards: We actually have our most winning is a Canadian team, they also went to Laguna Seca so they will haul anywhere.

Velocity: The thing I like about it is it’s set up its an endurance race, 1 it’s pretty much set up that it’s an even racing for instance last years winner 53. So if your car has too much stuff on it you start laps down.

Wendy: Equal playing field, that’s the point that’s the rules, yes you could put extra racy bits on your car it will be adjusted.

Velocity: If you came out with a Ferrari?

Wendy Edward: If you don’t run for the chumps the same level as everyone else you will get a first place in your class but that’s the most you can get it just wouldn’t be fair. You would be surprised, most EC cars are not first place, twice this happened where an EC car had won the actual race. Exceptional class cars they are not built for the endurance aspect of the race. One of the guys who had other Chump cars in the series and he knows how to build a car for endurance, so it was the first time they won and they been racing in the series for a minimum of 5 years.

Velocity: I was talking to the marshals and the interesting thing for the blue flaggers is this is endurance race. Let’s say we pick car 53 boy 53 is unbelievably fast blue flag form and then suddenly 53s not going to fast so you don’t know that there was a driver change and that makes the whole difference here to the nut behind the wheel makes the difference in this racing.

Motorsports Volunteers

My favorite way to volunteer is as a track-side marshal/corner worker. Road course marshals are race personnel that surround the road course track at specified stations that communicate to drivers with flags and each other on radios. These are a committed group of volunteers that with training and experience, can become qualified to work the big professional races like Indycar & Formula 1.

Alberta Race Marshals (ARM):
Alberta Race Marshals (ARM) is a new non-profit organization of volunteers that share a passion for racing and will be working closely with the Canadian Motorsport Response Team (CMRT) to benefit from advanced and cross training support.

Lunch, dinner & beverages will be provided by ChumpCar but please bring extra snacks and beverages if required.
An honorarium from ChumpCar will be donated to Alberta Race Marshals that we will be using towards the purchase of equipment for ARMs future racing events.
