Velocity: “What Classes are you running?”

Mathew Taskinen: “JUNIOR 2 4 STROKE & JR. ROTAX”

Velocity: “What got you into kart racing?

Mathew Taskinen: “My dad did 13 years ago & I was a big race fan.”

Velocity: “How long have you been doing this?

Mathew Taskinen: “3 Years.”

Velocity: “I saw you out on the track just now, you did well.”

Mathew Taskinen: “Thank You.”

Velocity: “Who is your favorite race car driver?”

Mathew Taskinen: “James Hinchcliff is my favorite IndyCar driver & Formula 1 Fernado Allonso.”

Velocity: “What is your favorite part of racing?”

Mathew Taskinen: “Racing, everything is fun once you get in the go kart, you just get a feeling and you just love.”

Velocity: “How old are you?

Mathew Taskinen: “15 Years old”

Velocity: “So you ran 1 class today, what is your other class?”

Mathew Taskinen: “Jr Briggs.”

Velocity: “So how is this different; more horse power or age?

Mathew Taskinen: “Briggs is a little slower than Rotax so the competition is a little bit tighter & easier to drive. It is really fun because sometimes there is bumping on the bumpers & passing.

Interview with ROTAX MASTERS racers Kart 161 Peter Magee from Invermere B.C. & Kart 926 Peter Sammon from Calgary.

Velocity: “What got you into kart racing?”

Peter Magee: “We took a course at Allen Berg Racing school several years ago & just kind of got hooked after that. I have also been following IndyCar since 1998.’

Velocity: “So you are a big road race fan?”

Peter Magee: “Yes you bet, open wheel.”

Velocity: “If you do not mind me saying: I interview a lot of kids moving their way up, you guys are not exactly young. How old are you?

Peter Magee: “54.”

Peter Sammon: “64.”

Velocity: “That is why the CKRC website says members from 8-64 years old.”

Peter Magee: “Yes there actually 1 member is 70 years old & out racing.”

Velocity: “What got you into kart racing?”

Peter Sammon: “Much of the same thing, I was interested in IndyCar. I used to go out to Vancouver. Met some guys out there & did a school, but sedan racing was kind of tailing off a little bit in Calgary. I wanted something that I could do a little bit of wrenching myself & not have to worry about a big shop. That is what got me into karting & it is a lot of fun. I did do a few sedan races at Race City with the W.C.M.A. back in the day. I used to race with the Proformance guys from Vancouver.”

Velocity: “So next race weekend you have your big Alberta Championship races.”

Peter Magee: “All the guys & gals will be coming down from Edmonton and will be racing in the 2 races. There is a race Saturday & Sunday.”

Velocity: “Where is the kart track in Edmonton?’

Peter Magee: “Warburg south west of Edmonton.”

Velocity: “Coming from the oval at Race City, I know it is pretty tough to find a place that wants an oval & drag strip. It is a great thing you guys got this track.”

Peter Magee: “It is fabulous!”

Peter Sammon: “Strathmore was very supportive of us. Having a track in Calgary was useful as Race City was close to a lot of Calgarians. Strathmore made it possible to come out & build this facility without a lot of hassles.”

Velocity: “So do you both run just one class?”

Peter Magee: “I do yes.”

Peter Sammon: “Yes just one & wrenching. Two a day is a bit much.”

Velocity: “So what’s the difference between the old & new track?”

Peter Sammon: “More technical track, little more turns, more hairpins so more technical.”

Peter Magee: “This track is far more technical but more flowing. I enjoy it a little bit more even though it is very new to me & everyone else.

An interview with John Kwong CKRC Club President, Shifter Class Kart 351 & Senior Rotax Max Kart 15.

Velocity: “Congratulations on the new track. So how do you like your new track?”

John Kwong: “Very much so, it is great to be on our own asphalt again, it has certainly been a journey from start to finish. We know our track is going to be improving as we go along but I think we have come a long way. I think we have a fine facility to start with here.

Velocity: “One thing I noticed, was that you changed race direction of the track from time to time; is this typical of karting, changing race direction?”

John Kwong: “It depends on where you go, it is some what unique, and we started doing this a long time by accident at a place called Kart Gardens. What we would do at the end of the day is we would have a Big Grand Prix Race. We would run a fun race after our regular race day, 25 laps & we would run the track backwards. Nobody had driven it backwards before & we liked it so much; we incorporated it into our regular race day. So that went into the design of the track, so we could run the track in both directions, in our mind that gave us 2 tracks in 1 basically.’

Velocity: “So do you have records going both ways?

John Kwong: “We do for our pervious track for bragging rights; we kept records of fastest & which direction it was.”

Velocity: “What classes are you running today?”

John Kwong: “Senior Rotax Max & Shifter.”

Velocity: “You’re not running 3 classes this year?

John Kwong: “Not yet, half the year off last year doing construction, I developed other muscles. My racing muscles atrophied so I want to work back to doing 3 classes.”

Velocity: “Today is cooler with the rainy weather, do you run slower or faster with the lower temperatures?

John Kwong: “To a certain degree, the motors like the cooler temperatures but the tires don’t. As cold as it was this morning we were running pretty good lap times. The track is getting rubbered in, even with the rain, the wind & the dust blowing across the track. The track is getting faster.”

Velocity: “For people interested in kart racing I have been telling them to do your Try a Kart Event, has this been good this year.”

John Kwong: “I believe the 1st 2 events sold out, we are doing 6 events this year. The 1st weekend are June 20 & 21 and have 87 people registered to go through the program. It is a good fundraiser for the club, it exposes competitive karting to the general public, and it is really something you cannot get anywhere else.”

Velocity: “I would say it is the best way to see if you want to make the investment of buying or building a kart. Once people get in a kart, your conversion rate of the Try a Kart Event to racer are quite high?”

John Kwong: “For those with the means to do so yes, that is sort of what it comes down to, people love it but some are limited by budget to go any further, at least they get a chance to try it.

Velocity: “That is where I say to people if the budget is not there come out & volunteer. As a marshal or some of the many other jobs required to run a race. My favorite has always been as a trackside marshal, the 2nd best way to watch a race, the best being in the kart.”

John Kwong: “We have always said that is the best seat being trackside.”

Velocity: “Anything new coming up?”

John Kwong: “The Alberta Shoot, it is a double header event at the end of June that we coordinated with the Edmonton club. It is a 4 race series, we hold the 1st 2 races, and I think theirs is at the end of August.”

Velocity: “Where is the Edmonton track?

John Kwong: “Warburg Alberta just west of Leduc.”

Kart Racing or Volunteering

2 ways to watch a race is: racing yourself or volunteering. The CKRC has a great program called ‘Try a Kart’.

If you ever wanted to go kart racing now is your chance. The CKRC have a great way to see if kart racing is for you, ‘Try a Kart’, program designed allows the public to experience kart racing for a small fee. Experience real race karts, with an hour-long classroom instruction & then 3 on track sessions. Spots are filling up fast! http://ckrc.com/Downloads/Other/TryAKart-brochure.pdf

The 2nd best way to watch a race is as a Volunteer Race Official; my favorite is being a track side Corner Marshal. Corner marshals are the personnel that surround a track at corner stations, communicate to racers with flags & communicate with each other controlled by radios. Response to the track & to the racers is also part of the job but training is provided as to when & how to do so. As an experienced marshal I would say bring layers of clothes, racing runs rain or shine. Always try to where white clothes, never red or yellow so not to cause confusion to racers when flagging. You will be outside for the day so bring bug spray, sun block, extra food & water even though lunch is provided by the club.

It takes a lot of people to put on an event on: Corner Marshals, Weigh Scale Marshall, Grid/Pit Marshall, Starter, Pre-race Technical Inspector, Post-race Technical Inspector, Lap Scoring and Time Keeper, Recovery Vehicle Operator & Waiver and Gate Personnel.
