2014 Alberta Autocross-Solo Schedule

Autoslalom/Solo 2 is great motorsport for all car enthusiasts for timing, control & speed. You are racing the clock on a course laid out with pylons like a mini road course, cars are sent out one at time so it is not wheel to wheel racing making it is safer.

Courses are usually tight & technical so you are not looking at high speed but is designed for driver skill & precise car control. This would be great for any new driver wanting to work on their skills & veteran drivers wanting to be competitive against other drivers by pushing it to the limit.

To start off with costs of this type of racing is low compared to others, minimal equipment is an approved helmet which in some cases can be borrowed or rented from some events. Cars are put in classes from completely stock cars to modified race cars, so you could use your own street car. Check-out websites below for race fees, club memberships, car class breakdown & minimal equipment required.

Running of the event is done by putting racers in groups: racing & doing race positions that can be marshalling or timing. The clubs put on race schools that will help you start out getting into the sport which are quite cost effective & worth every penny.

I did the Solo 2 race school in 2001 at Race City Motorsport Park through the Calgary Sports Car Club with my 1998 Pontiac Sunfire. I ran in most of the events of the 2001 & I thought I was good until I asked a veteran racer Reijo Silvennoinen for help on improving my time. Reijo took me around the course with me in passenger seat & he spanked my time with about 2-3 seconds which in this type of racing was a lot. What this taught me was where I could push harder & where it was important to be smooth and have better car control.

I had a lot of fun taking the race school & competing in Solo 2 as these taught me better car control & increased my skill for everyday driving, kart & stockcar racing.

The only reason I missed the end of the season was one weekend I was competing in Solo 2, Stockcar racing on the oval & doing road course rescue at Race City. The Saturday started off with Solo 2 racing in my Claimer class stockcar which sucked as my car was set up to turn left, so my times were bad. That night I got shoved into the wall at full speed in my claimer car on the oval which destroyed my car & injured me. The next day the only way I was able to do road course rescue was I had 2 competent fireman as I drove the truck, otherwise the injuries from stockcar racing ending my racing for that year.

The 2014 season will be a joint championship with events hosted by both the Calgary Sports Car Club as well as the Southern Alberta Solosport Club. Events will be split between the Westerner in Red Deer and the Fort Macleod Airport.
