2016 Southern Alberta Solosport Club (SASC) Winter Driver Training
This Southern Alberta Solosport Club (SASC) Winter Driver Training is a school for the general public who want to learn better driving skills under winter conditions. The instructors come from various motorsports backgrounds: autocross champions, formula car and high performance driving instructors, time attack competitors, sports/touring car, go kart and rally drivers.

Interview with Warren Hoewy student of the 2016 SASC Winter Driver Training School

Velocity: “How did you come to hear about the school?”
Warren Hoewy: “On Beyond.ca.”
Velocity: “So you started with classroom and then you have been on exercises; did you learn anything new from what you already know?”
Warren Hoewy: “A good overlay of what to expect, Reijo is pretty personable and did a great job of making people feel comfortable. They make sure people are having fun at the same time, so that was kind of nice. We have 2 different classes: the G Circle & Collision Avoidance so far today.”
Velocity: “Did you find anything different from doing the school?”
Warren Hoewy: “I definitely learned a couple of things I didn’t know. I am usually one of those guys, who self teach. I am an enthusiast who likes to drive & have fun, so there was a couple of knowledge point’s I didn’t know. I have picked up on them and you can tell they work. Even for someone coming in whose been on track, have done track days & the drag strip, as an enthusiast I still learn things. So it can be better for a full beginner or someone who just doesn’t feel comfortable driving period.”
Velocity: “Is there anyone you would refer to the school?”
Warren Hoewy: “I don’t think there would be anyone I would not suggest to the school. I would suggest it to my own mother. I just had her put winter tires on this year & she texts me every time it snows, to tell me how unbelievable they are. Something like this should be part of our driver’s license in the beginning.”

Velocity: “How did you hear about the school?”
Yvonne Kwan: “I just sort of looked to see if there was anything like that in Calgary, I was interested in taking some winter driving lessons. I do a lot of driving in the winter to the mountains, normally my boyfriend does the driving but I feel I should figure it out for myself as well.”
Velocity: “Did you hear the story on how this school started?”
Yvonne Kwan: “I heard it this morning, Reijo was saying he was an instructor at NAIT, there was a pretty tragic accident involving some of his students. He felt that is was necessary to start a winter driving class, I guess they had done something similar out in Ottawa. It has been a really great thing for Calgary ever since.”
Velocity: “Well defiantly because no driver school you got before showed you anything like this.”
Yvonne Kwan: “I have never experienced anything like it, I was born & raised in Alberta but no one has ever shown me how to drive like this before, so it is great.”
Velocity: “What exercises have you done today?”
Yvonne Kwan: “We have done the 2 feet in exercise, the G Circle now the slalom course.”
Velocity: “How do you find today?”
Yvonne Kwan: “Great so far, all the instructors are very patient, very nice guys & very knowledgeable. They have definitely have given me some great pointers & I have been more comfortable with my vehicle even today.”
Velocity: “I myself remember they tell you to turn into skid but, you will never what that is like until you do it.”
Yvonne Kwan: “Yes this is like a playground it nice to have all the space & not to be scared to try something or just to push a little harder. This is to get that feeling on how your car works & handles.
Velocity: “I thank you for the interview.’
