Car 3 historically leads the Daytona 500 & Dale Earnhardt Jr. Car 88 National Guard Chevrolet wins the race!

Historically Austin Dillon Car 3 DOW Chevrolet leads the field in 2014 Daytona 500 & Dale Earnhardt Jr. Car 88 National Guard Chevrolet wins the race in a exciting green white checker! Second place Denny Hamlin Car 11 FedEx Express Toyota had a great week during Speed Week and won everything he was in except this one but was able to give Dale Earnhardt Jr. a good fight to the end.

Austin Dillon Car 3 DOW Chevrolet leads the first lap and is able to hold the lead until lap 3 when passed by Denny Hamlin Car 11 FedEx Express Toyota. 1st Caution  came out on lap 22 for Kyle Larson Car 42 Target Chevrolet spin then it was red flagged on lap 39 for rain. Daytona International Speedway Warning “Weather Alert: Severe weather forecasted for the DIS area. We highly advise that you clear the grandstands and secure items at campsites. Please take necessary precautions.” Race was rain delayed for 6 hours & 20 minutes and engines were restarted at 8:32 P.M. ET Engines re-started.

Lap 39 caution resumes the field, lap 47 green flag race resumes with Kyle Busch Car 18 M&M’s Toyota as leader. Lap 75 Kyle Busch Car 18 M&M’s Toyota penalized with drive thru penalty for pit lane infraction, then on lap 78 Kyle Busch Car 18 M&M’s Toyota penalty upgraded to stop & go because he did not serve drive thru penalty.

The race was intense with 19 leaders & 43 lead changes which kept a lot drivers still in the race to the end.

The big one did not happen until lap 144 which involved 13 cars Kevin Harvick Car 4 Budweiser Chevrolet got into the Brian Scott Car 33 Whitetail Chevrolet, sending Aric  Almirola Car 43 Smithfield Ford into the wall who then collected Michael Waltrip Car 66 BlueDEF/AAA Toyota, Kasey Kahne Car 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet, Brian Vickers Car 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota, Michael Annett Car 7 Pilot/Flying J Travel Centers Chevrolet, Ryan Newman Car 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet, Casey Mears Car 13 GEICO Chevrolet, Paul Menard Car 27 Peak/Menards Chevrolet, Austin Dillon Car 3 DOW Chevrolet & Danica Patrick Car 10 GoDaddy Chevrolet. Lap 197 under caution Dale Earnhardt Jr. Car 88 National Guard picked up a piece of tape on his grille from Ryan Newman Car 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet, he tried to get rid of by pulling up to the pace car. Lap 198 the race restarts with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Car 88 National Guard & Brad Keselowski Car 2 Miller Lite Ford coming into the green. The next lap Dale Earnhardt Jr. holds the lead as he comes to the white & as he is about to get to the checker flag a caution flag comes out. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Car 88 National Guard wins his second Daytona 500 ten years after his one. Reed Sorenson Car 36 Golden Corral Chevrolet & Carl Edwards Car 99 Fastenal Ford were caught up in the last lap caution.

This was a great race for Hendrick Motorsports who with Dale Earnhardt Jr in 1st place, Jeff Gordon Car 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet in 4th place & Jimmie Johnson Car 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet in 5th place. Also with the changes in the Chase Championship this win could put Dale Earnhardt Jr in the Chase.
